Telegram was the most downloaded app in the world in January: but how to get Whatsapp chats in the Russian app? Here is the procedure to follow
Telegram takes advantage of Whatsapp’s misstep and ranks first in the ranking of the most downloaded apps in the world (other than video games) in January. According to the data released by Sensor Tower, a company specializing in the analysis of the app and mobile market, compared to 2020 the Russian app recorded a + 380% with 63 million installations that allowed it to give app of the Menlo Park group, until last month at the top of the chart. Immediately behind Telegram is TikTok (62 million downloads) and then Signal, the other alternative in the field of messaging to make a real leap forward compared to the past; only fifth Whatsapp.
Much of the credit goes to the new privacy policy introduced by Whatsapp at the beginning of the year (and then postponed to fix the problem): the pop-up message appeared to the 2 billion subscribers of the application at the beginning of the year was confused and caused criticism from many users. What was supposed to be the request for consent for the possibility of being contacted by companies that use Whatsapp Business – and therefore have a way of interfacing fan databases between Facebook and Whatsapp , mixing data storage on a single server (and therefore requesting data sharing between the two companies) – has turned into an aut aut in people’s minds: either you accept a total sharing of information with the social network or we will delete your account.

In reality, the situation is quite different: we know that the social network has been drawing information from the app since 2016, including your phone number (unless you are one of the lucky few who have been quick to turn off information sharing. when the option was still available during that year). But it is equally certain that the app is not able to read messages in chat or listen to our phone calls , protected by end-to-end encryption that makes us safe from any possible abuse: therefore Facebook has no way to access. to our chats to use them for advertising purposes.
Despite this, Telegram was able to enjoy this involuntary wake from Whatsapp and to make the life of its users even easier, it has created an ad hoc solution to allow them to transfer Whatsapp chats to Telegram with a few simple steps. Import works on both Android and iOS and allows you to transfer messages, files, documents, voices, photos and videos. A good way to have the history of Whatsapp conversations ready for use within the new application.
How to do? Here is the procedure to follow on your iPhone : open Whatsapp, choose the chat you are interested in, then go to the settings, click on “Export chat”, choose whether to also insert the multimedia files and then select the Telegram icon. At this point, the list of your Telegram contacts will open and you just have to choose the chat in which to pour the content by confirming the operation with the “Import” button.
The mechanism on Android is very similar : open Whatsapp, choose the menu button at the top right, click on «More» and then on «Export». At this point you must select the conversation that interests you, share it on Telegram by selecting the reference contact in the Russian app and finish the process by clicking on “Import”.
Too bad it is not possible to carry out the reverse path (from Telegram to Whatsapp), otherwise we would have solved the age-old problem of how to transfer Whatsapp chats from Android to iOS. But the Facebook group app is working on multi-device use so it is pretty sure that there will be (positive) news in this sense shortly.
