Unlock the iPhone with a mask without a PIN – New update makes it possible

With the beta version of the iOS 14.5 operating system, Apple is introducing a useful feature for iPhone owners during the Corona period. However, there are limitations.
Unlocking the iPhone via Face ID with a mask is currently impossible. But with the update to iOS 14.5, Apple is creating new possibilities. The Californian tech giant is equipping its beta version of the operating system with a feature that should make it easier to unlock it via Face ID in times of the corona pandemic. In the future, Apple fans will be able to unlock their iPhone even if they are wearing a face mask. However, spoilers , only if you wear an Apple Watch on your wrist. How exactly does that work? We’ll tell you.

Unlock the iPhone with the Apple Watch: Here’s how!

Unlocking despite the face mask is only possible in combination with an Apple Watch . This must be worn on the wrist and also unlocked . The iPhone is unlocked as usual with a glance into the camera, then the watch gives haptic feedback. Then it should be possible to lock the iPhone again via Apple Watch. Payment transactions on the device – for example purchases in the App Store – are not possible with this method.

As early as 2020, Apple recognized that unlocking via Face ID posed a particular challenge during the pandemic. At that time, however, the developers solved the problem differently: As soon as the iPhone recognized a face mask, it prompted you to enter the PIN . For many users, however, this was not particularly satisfactory.

According to media reports, the group is already working on another solution to unlock iPhones. Models with an optical in-display fingerprint sensor could be released this year – this is reported by the blog network “Engadget”, among others.

Apple iOS 14.5 offers more data protection

In addition, the Californian technology group is expanding its data protection measures with the update of its in-house operating system. In future, users will have to expressly confirm that their usage behavior is being tracked and used by apps and that these are accessing a device-specific advertising ID , as reported by “Golem.de”. Different data are assigned to a device. (Also interesting: Google data octopus – How do I delete my data correctly? )

Criticism of the stricter guideline came from Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook fears that these guidelines would make the personalization of advertising – the most important source of income for Facebook and Co. – less precise. This would damage small and medium-sized companies in particular, according to Zuckerberg.
