Elon Musk Sues OpenAI and Sam Altman, Again

Elon Musk Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI, Alleging Deception and Breach of Principles

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has filed a new lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, in U.S. federal court. Musk alleges that OpenAI’s actions have violated his rights and interests, claiming he was misled during the company’s founding.

At the heart of Musk’s complaint is his assertion that Altman and current OpenAI president Greg Brockman deceived him into co-founding an artificial intelligence company under the premise that it would remain a non-profit.

The lawsuit contends that after Musk invested millions in the project, he was “betrayed by Altman and his [Microsoft] allies,” who allegedly created “an opaque network of for-profit OpenAI affiliates engaged in rampant self-enrichment.” The filing dramatically describes this betrayal as being of “Shakespearean proportions.”

These claims mirror those in a previous lawsuit Musk filed against OpenAI and Altman in the U.S. District Court for Northern California, which he later dropped. Musk has consistently expressed concerns about AI’s development and potential risks to humanity. He asserts that OpenAI, by shifting towards commercial endeavors, has diverged from its original mission and principles, thereby endangering the safety and ethics of AI technology. “OpenAI no longer adheres to the principles that were laid out when it was founded,” Musk states, arguing that the organization now prioritizes commercial interests over public good.

The lawsuit also implicates Microsoft, which has invested $13 billion in OpenAI. It alleges that Microsoft, while presenting OpenAI as a non-profit without shareholders, sought to leverage its investment by integrating OpenAI with its Azure cloud computing system.

Despite Musk’s respect for Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the lawsuit claims a fundamental misalignment between the values of Microsoft and those of OpenAI.
