As of May 2021, the Polygon (MATIC) blockchain has become one of the favorite alternatives to Ethereum (ETH) for DeFi users and other NFT collectors. Now, the solution seems to appeal beyond the limits of the crypto ecosystem.
DraftKings sets sail on Polygon
DraftKings is an American sports betting company valued at more than $ 19 billion on the NASDAQ stock exchange.
In August 2021, the company embarked on the crypto adventure, with the launch of an NFT platform soberly called DraftKings Marketplace . Quickly, the platform was talked about following the publication of the collection of NFT “Autograph’s Preseason Access” , honoring iconic athletes, such as the Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt , or the American quarterback, Tom Brady .
In a joint announcement , DraftKings Marketplace and Polygon announced a partnership between the 2 entities:
“This agreement provides DraftKings Marketplace with a scalable, green blockchain solution that increases throughput and expands capacity. “
In addition, this partnership allows DraftKings to operate a validator node on the Polygon network. As a reminder, the Polygon ecosystem is based on a proof of stake (PoS) consensus. As a result, it is the validator nodes which are responsible for verifying and validating the transactions sent on the network.

Polygon’s decentralization called into question
The addition of new actors as validators of the Polygon network is good news for decentralization. However, some decisions taken unilaterally by the developers call into question some aspects of the decentralization of the project.
Recently, the project has witnessed a significant increase in the number of daily trades , which was in fact caused by arbitrage bots . In order to solve this problem, the developers of the network decided to increase the transaction fees from 1 to 30 gwei per gas , in order to limit the propensity to spam.
Although this decision has effectively reduced the phenomenon of spam, it has not been received positively by the entire community. Indeed, some members did not appreciate the unilateral nature of the decision . In addition, it impacts the entire community to restrict the activity of a handful of users.
